Why resolutions fail

Make this the last year you need one.

I’ve never been a fan of New Year's Resolutions.

I believe you shouldn’t wait until the new year to make a change.

You have the opportunity to start right now.

So why aren’t you?

Let’s talk about ways to effectively build winning habits.

So this next year you don’t need a resolution to get started.

Pro-Tip: Start small

When you are looking to start anything new.

Something that is going to require consistency and effort over time to work.

You need to start small.

Reinforcing the importance of consistency from day one.

If you are working out, start by walking twice a week for 20 minutes

If you want to write/publish more, start publishing on X, Threads, or LinkedIn weekly.

If you start a new business, text a friend or contact you think could benefit from your business.

Consistency is paramount. Not intensity.

You will beat 90% of people by being consistent alone.

Make it your biggest metric of success.

Pro-Tip: Motivation is a trap

Motivation is like sugar or caffeine.

It provides a great boost to get you up and off your ass.

But without more quality ingredients. You will fizzle out.

So what do you need?

Discipline.

You’ve probably heard this before. It isn’t breaking news.

However, many people fail to cultivate this essential trait.

So, how do we cultivate discipline?

By making a habit of keeping the promises we make to ourselves.

Like a New Year’s Resolution…

When I started going to the gym consistently aga in 2021.

I used to always say to myself.

The days I don’t feel like going are the days I have to.

This promise was tested every time I wanted to say no to going to the gym.

But by choosing to say yes.

This not only improved my discipline.

But also my confidence.

So, on the days you don’t feel like it.

Remember, those are the days that define your success.

Pro-Tip: Don’t announce, just move.

The journey of making a change in your life is personal.

You are not obligated to tell anyone about what you are doing.

Until you have reached a point where it could amplify your work or at which point you are comfortable sharing.

When I started TeachOne.

I didn’t tell anyone for a year.

I just went to work and started figuring it out.

Then when it made sense, I started sharing my journey.

Confident that this isn’t something that I am not going to start and stop.

This is something I am committed to seeing through, no matter how long
it may take.

No faster way to lose the confidence of folks who could support you than
being someone who folds when it gets hard.

Build the habit in silence, and let the world witness you’ve found your stride.

New habits are hard to build.

The good news is that once they are established. They are harder to break.

Once you break that threshold it will become easier to keep going.

However, you’ll have a lot fighting against you.

  • Voices telling you it’s too hard.

  • Voices telling you it’s not fair.

  • Voices telling you it is ok if you miss a day.

So when that moment comes for you, where it is easy to say “not today”

Do it anyway.

That being said.

What are you waiting for?
